(Dundee, NY) – There wasn’t a full moon on Friday night at Outlaw Speedway, but don’t tell the teams and drivers of the Friendly Dodge & Ford Big Block/Small Block Modifieds that. A crazy feature with several jingles including a crash that wiped out the top five runners and a rain shower that nearly stacked up the entire field in turn one was just a few notable stoppages.
Ron Cartwright Jr. who has struggled in the middle portion of the season, led the opening laps of the event. But breathing down his neck was Tyler Siri, three-time winner in 2016. Siri would take the lead while Cartwright would later spin in turn two and collect several machines including Lee Bills and Derrick Podsiadlo.
The races next wild event was a pop up rain shower that kicked up as the field was coming back to the green flag, seeing all cars diving into the first turn slide up the racetrack and nearly over the banking. The field would be put under the red flag and parked on the hot pit lane.
The track crew immediately went to work and in a short time, had the track back in racing condition. On the ensuing restart, Siri had a rear hub lock up, sending the Superior Crushing No. 28 spinning on the inside of the second turn.
The rest of the top five had little to no time to react and Siri collected positions two through five in an accident. Names like Siri, Tomkins, Johnson and Paine were among those involved.
That handed the lead over Scott Boudinot, who would battle with Donnie Lawson for the lead. With the race winding down, Johnson made his way back through the depleted field and wrestled the lead away from Lawson.
Johnson went on to win the wild thirty-lap race over Lawson, Justin Wright, Boudinot and Paine.
The beginning of the Crate Sportsman race was dominated by ‘Z-Squared’ Zach Ziegenhagen from Horseheads. Ziegenhagen has found himself in the lead several times this season, and has been logging laps trying to figure out how to make sure the No. 104 was there at the end. Although he would not be the headline on this night, Ziegenhagen brought home a solid third place finish.
This night would belong to point leader Tommy Collins Jr., who finally found the key to unlock the door to Outlaw Victory Lane. Collins is new to Outlaw Speedway full time and earlier this season, won a feature event at Thunder Mountain.
Friday night, Collins changed all of that. The driver of the No. 713 took the lead on lap fourteen and would lead the final eleven laps to capture his first Outlaw Speedway win.
Adam Depuy didn’t let the Knowles boys lead every lap in the twenty-lap Crate Late Model feature event Friday night. Depuy, who continues to tweak on his No. 99, led the opening lap before ‘Pork Chop’ Brian Knowles eventually made his way past Depuy for the lead.
Knowles would cruise away in the caution-free event, leading by a large margin at Greg Hixson’s checkered flag. Depuy, Jason Knowles and Bob Buono filled out the running order for the RUSH sanctioned division.
Rich Michael Jr. picked up his first Outlaw Speedway Farmers Insurance IMCA Modified victory on Friday night for the 2016 season. Michael has ran several events over the course of the last month, after purchasing the No. 17x car to prepare it for a big trip to Boone, Iowa to compete at the Nationals.
Phil Yaw looked stout and looked like he might break his three year win drought, but the likes of Michael and Brad Smith were just too much for Yaw’s No. 98. Smith has really come to life late in the season, but Michael had the sweet spot identified on Friday night.
Michael would take the victory over Smith, Yaw, Brandon Smith and Shawn Bruce.
The Creekside Entertainment Street Stocks saw CJ Guererri and Gene Balmer battle it out for the win in their fifteen-lap feature event. Guererri is still searching for his first victory of the season after losing their primary engine last week early in the feature.
While Guererri paced the field, Balmer was making moves in his MacDonald Contracting, Gene Balmer Used Cars No. 38. The driver out of Elmira, who admitted in Victory Lane that the win Friday was a great test for the team for the late season money shows, would race his way to his first Outlaw Speedway victory of the season.
Guererri would be a bridesmaid once again, but inches closer to his first win of 2016. Point leader Chuck Winslow, Quinn Sutherland and Jake Karlnoski rounded out the top five finishers at the end.
Chad Ayers was incredibly close to locking down his first Outlaw Speedway win on Friday night. But standing in his way was one of the strongest cars in the division this season.
Ray Hyer, driving the Brian and Vanessa Grant-owned No. 4D, made a daring move into turn one to take the lead away from Ayers late in the going. Hyer said in Victory Lane that he just gave it a try throwing it into the first turn on the bottom and it just worked out to get the lead. Ayers tried to keep pace with Hyer at the end, but Hyer’s ride proved to be too much.
‘Burnin’ Bacon’ Jordan Bacon extended his winning streak to a six-pack with a win Friday in the Winners Circle Deli Bandit division. Bacon had to fend off battles with Austin Labar and Joey Clark to get the win, as Clark would lead early before Bacon took over.
In other action Friday night, Jared Zimbardi won a thriller over Mark Smith in the Patriot Sprint Tour event. Zimbardi won by 0.04 seconds at the line over the Central PA sprint car driver who has come to love Outlaw Speedway.
Matt DiBenedetto won the MRO Celebrity event on Friday night, his first win in the event that was running it’s ninth edition of the celebrity race. Michael Burrows took the win in the Excel 600 Modified feature event, pulling away in the second half of the twenty-lap feature.
