Casey Pavlick Climbs To Onyx Summit Victory; Marcuccilli Charges To Race 2 Win
DUNDEE, NY – For Immediate Release – October 29th, 2015 – Curtis Berleue Photo –
Going in to the Onyx Summit makeup Crate Sportsman feature, carried over from September 19th, Casey Pavlick had to be a heavy favorite. Pavlick dominated the close of the 2015 season at Black Rock Speedway, where he wrapped up his second straight track championship in his Bicknell chassis.
Pavlick wasn't a dominant force in this race however, as front row starter Chris Daugherty looked to be tough to beat on this night. Daugherty, driving the Chris Mashewske A+ Superior Services No. 17, led the opening 32 laps until the handle seemed to go away.
Rocky Warner and his Jake Spraker-owned 1J was the hard charger in the middle portion of the race- advancing to the third position on lap 24. Warner's great run would end on lap 27 when he slowed with a rare mechanical problem, drawing a caution flag.
Pavlick began his charge to the lead on the restart, hounding Daugherty for the lead and waiting for the Elmira, NY pilot to slip up just once. Daugherty was true on the bottom side of the speedway, which left the 'Pavlick Lane' open for the Addison, NY driver to work.
Pavlick took the lead on lap 33 and never looked back to take the $2,500 win. He had to survive a couple of late race restarts versus speedway rival Steve Gray, but Pavlick rolled the top each time through turns 1 and 2. The win was a little bit of redemption for Pavlick as it was earlier this Spring when he lost the lead on lap 33 to lose a 50-lap Crate Sportsman Grit Series race.
Gray streaked across the line in second, Ray Bliss had a great effort to finish on the podium, while Dave Marcuccilli and Daugherty rounded out the top five. Sixth through ten was Stacey Jackson, Chris Fisher, Brady Fultz, Brett Buono and Karl Comfort.
In the makeup $600 to win Street Stock feature, there was but one caution flag that slowed the field on lap 20. Glenn Writenour and Kurt Stebbins put on a fierce battle for the lead and the win, but it was Writenour who would lead the 30-lap feature wire to wire.
Writenour did a great job backing up his entry into Turn 1, where Stebbins would aggressively attack the corner entry. Writenour would pull away off the second and fourth turns, which would prove to be the difference in the race.
Jeremy Potrzebowski would bring his Greg's Auto Body Chevy Camaro home in third, CJ Guererri would start an epic weekend for his team with a solid fourth place run and Teddy Morseman would round out the top five. Bob Buono, Jared Hill, Dennis Cummings, Nate Daggett and Kane Stebbins would fill out the top ten spots.
Jim Young dominated the 50-lap NY6A Micro Sprint Tour championship, leading all 50 laps to take the $1,000 win. Young had to fend off Tyler Walker on a few restarts but Young was by far the class of the field in this September 19th makeup feature. He diced his way through lap traffic better than anyone on this night, sealing the victory.
Walker locked up the tour championship with his second place finish and celebrated in victory lane with his crew and sponsors. Shawn Freeland, Nate Hendrix and Larry Mekic completed the top five finishers.
In regularly scheduled Dutch Hoag National Open Weekend action...
Dave Marcuccilli considered packing it up and heading home after the completion of the Onyx Summit. Even though they came home with a top five, the car wasn't where they thought it needed to be to run competitively. Good thing they stuck with it- Marcuccilli took home the regularly scheduled Crate Sportsman 50-lap feature paying $1,000 to win.
AJ Lloyd took the green from the front row and led the opening 48 laps of the event, with teammate Karl Comfort running second for a majority of those laps. But with two laps remaining, Marcuccilli made his move after riding behind Lloyd quite patiently, to take the lead for good.
Marcuccilli led the final eight-tenths of a mile to take home the win over Lloyd, Comfort came home third, while Brady Fultz and Casey Pavlick made it two top fives on the night for both drivers.
"We weren't really that good in the first feature, but we left the same setup on it," Marcuccilli said in Champion Power Equipment Victory Lane.
"We kind of guessed on tires and I think we got it right."
The Street Stocks competed in 10-lap dashes with 15 cars max taking the green in each dash. The Dashes would give away a guaranteed starting spot in the Empire 100, with one lucky driver being drawn for a Champion Generator.
In Dash No. 1 it was Jon Carpenter who would take the victory and lock himself into the 26-car field for the Empire 100. Teddy Morseman, Daryl Krebs, Bob Buono and Marc Minutolo would follow Carpenter's J12 across the line.
Chuck Winslow would bring the Gene Balmer's Used Cars No. 61 over the line in the 8th spot, but would win the Champion 9000kw generator in the process.
Dash No. 2 saw a fierce battle at the front of the pack with Jeremy Potrzebowski coming across the line first, to lock himself into the Empire 100. Potrzebowski has been a multi-time champion of the Street Stock division at Black Rock and has typically been a driver lock in on points. But a part-time schedule at "The Rock" found Potrzebowski with no guaranteed spot to fall back on.
Dennis Cummings, Jared Hill, Nate Daggett and Dylan Cecce would follow the No. T1 over the line in the top five. Hill, the 2015 Black Rock Street Stock points champion, would be the driver pulled out of the hat for the second Champion generator.
The 360 Late Models made their lone appearance at Black Rock in 2015 in a special 25-lap race sponsored by Schuyler Chassis, Gavenda Racing Engines, Speedway Performance and Close Racing Supply.
"The Outlaw" Dave DuBois would take the lead from Jared Hill's No. 57J on lap 5 and lead the remaining circuits to pick up his first win at Black Rock in many years. DuBois was a regular at the speedway when the class was a regular division. The driver hailing for the Corfu/Batavia area put his old notebook to work in securing the victory, in a car he had never brought to the 'Fast Four-Tenths-Mile' previously.
"This car's never been here," said DuBois.
"We just needed a little more tuning, I say that every time I get out of the car. I held back a little bit once I got the lead, just in case I needed to save some for a challenge at the end."
Hill came home second, Mike Jackson rebounded from a mid-race slip up for third, Glenn Writenour fourth and Bill Holmes rounded out the top five finishers.
Twelve IMCA Modifieds made the tow to Black Rock for their final race at "The Rock" for 2015, competing in a $400 to win event. Harry Ely picked up his first win of 2015 at the speedway after a season full of podium finishes- but never a trip to Champion Power Equipment Victory Lane.
Ely was the class of the field in this one as he took the lead from Tony Harris on lap 5 and led all the way to Scott Hixson's double checkers at lap 20. Rodney Morgan had a great run for second, Rich Karlnoski finished third, while Bobby Maynard and Mike Smith filled out the top five.
"Best time of the year to do this," said Ely.
"It feels really good to be here, we've been close all year just not enough to get the win. You have to have the balance perfect on these cars, you have a lot of power and no tire."
In the NY6A Micro Tour 25-lap feature it was Ben Kysor who made it through the lap cars fastest, to secure the $500 win. Kysor and Mickey Ciliberta put on a fabulous show for the Black Rock faithful, trading the lead several times while trying to put cars at the back of the pack down laps.
In the end, Kysor would master "The Rock" for the win, Ciliberta came home second, Tyler Walker made it a clean sweep of podium finishes for third, Jim Young fourth and Jacob Lewczyk the top five.
"I fell back to second there for awhile and needed the lap traffic to help me catch Mickey," Kysor said.
"From the heat to our feature, I don't think the track changed too much."
Promoter Mike Jackson and the staff at Black Rock Speedway wish to thanks the hearty fans who came out and braved the cold to see a great show on Night 1 of Dutch Hoag National Open Weekend.
