Cartwright Jr Outduels Fisher For Modified Victory At Black Rock Speedway

DUNDEE, NY – For Immediate Release – May 2nd, 2015

The second points night at the Black Rock Speedway saw a great crowd on hand to go along with 87 cars that filled the pit area across the six divisions at the speedway.  The Modified feature saw 3 lead changes within the last 10 laps and it was Ron Cartwright Jr that would outduel Bluff Point, NY’s Eric Fisher for the lead and the win.

Fran Hilton and Stacy Jackson led the field to Scott Hixson’s green flag but there would be trouble on the speedway before the field could even complete one lap.  Hilton and third place starter Marcus Dinkins made contact on the backstretch, sending Hilton air born in turn 3.

Hilton would keep the car on all four tires but slid back into the racing groove leaving Dundee, NY’s Brady Fultz no place to go- the two made heavy contact drawing the red flag.  Hilton gingerly got himself out of the car with a minor injury to his shoulder while Fultz’ night was done in the 70 car.

As the field took the green, young guns Dinkins and Addison, NY’s Joe Dgien pulled out and hid as the field completed 22 laps out of 30 without a caution to slow the field down.  Dinkins was fast in the Leaf Racewear 17 car but he would surrender the lead on Lap 21 to Joe Dgien as the right rear tire on the Dinkins ride went flat.  Dinkins would nurse the car around one more lap but drew the caution on lap 22, setting up a wild 8 lap dash to the finish.

Eighth place starter Ron Cartwright and ninth place starter Eric Fisher had quietly moved their way into the top five prior to the yellow.  On the restart Dgien stayed glued to the bottom side of the speedway but Fisher blasted around the outside in turns 3 and 4 to take the lead with seven laps remaining.

With five laps remaining Dgien made a run to the low side that didn’t work, meanwhile Cartwright overtook third position from Corning’s Cory Costa.  Cartwright set out to get by Dgien for second and would do just that with only 3 laps to go.

“We played a little tire game and it come into our favor with the long green flag run to start the race,” said Cartwright in SuperGen Products, Champion Power Equipment Victory Lane.

Cartwright took the lead into turn 1 as he and Fisher got the signal for two laps to go.  Fisher battled tough on the outside but it was the driver from Fillmore, NY driving the DJ Beardsley Electric, Ferris and Sons Concrete #2b that would take his first checkered flag of 2015.

Fisher would have to settle for second, Dgien finished third, Costa fourth and Tyler Siri recovered from early problems to bring home a top five finish.

After a tough season in 2014, Cartwright was elated to get their first checkered flag this early in the season.

“It feels good as we had one get away from us at Woodhull last week on the last lap so I didn’t want that to happen again.”

Elbridge, NY pilot Rob Humphreys led the field to the green in the Crate Sportsman feature and looked to run away with the feature in his #85 machine.  Humphreys pulled out to a big lead and led the feature until a lap 21 yellow flag slowed the field.  This put the defending track champion Casey Pavlick out of Addison, NY on the back bumper of the Humphreys ride.

On the restart Humphreys tried to hold off the C&S Services 18p but it was to no avail.  Pavlick powered around the outside of turn 4 to take the lead and not look back, scoring his first victory of the season in his title defense.  Humphreys got passed late by Jake Dgien in the 3x to make it a 1-2 sweep for the contingent from Addison.  Humphreys settled for third while Ross Vleck and Chris Silvers rounded out the top five.

“It’s been quite a while since I’ve been here (in victory lane) but this feels awesome,” said Pavlick in Victory Lane.

“I was riding the brakes to get through the corners and I didn’t think I was going to get him but we were able to get by.”

Chuck Winslow and LaVerne Knickerbocker led the field to Scott Hixson’s green flag in the 20 lap MRC Street Stock feature.  As they worked lap 2, Winslow and Knickerbocker made contact sending Winslow to the infield in turn 4.  Both drivers would start at the tail on the restart with the lead being handed over to Dundee’s Jake Karlnoski.

Karlnoski and Geneva’s CJ Guererri endured a great battle for the lead with Guererri taking the lead on a lap 2 restart.  The caution would come out again on lap 4 with Karlnoski retaking the lead as they came down to complete lap 5 on the restart.  Yellow flew several times in the first half of this feature but Karlnoski fended off all challenges.

Jared Hill and Tracy Dunn battled CJ Guererri hard for the second spot and once Hill cleared Guererri, he set his sights on Karlnoski.  Karlnoski came across the line first but during post race inspection it was found that the wheels on the 55x were not to specification and Karlnoski was disqualified.  Hill maintains second place earnings, CJ Guererri third, Dunn 4th and Chuck Winslow recovered well for a top five.

The M&M Auto Sales & Service IMCA Modifieds had a tough time getting a consistent run of green flag laps in during their 20 lap feature.  The race was shortened to 16 laps due to so many yellow flags with defending IMCA champion Rich Karlnoski taking the win over Tony Harris with Keith Lamphere, Scott Sebring and Ken Buck the top five.

James Kreidler III in the 79k finally broke the streak that Rich Sharpsteen had set- having won every 4 Cylinder race locally for the first 2 weeks of competition.  Kreidler had to make a daring pass on the outside of Scott Bradley in Turn 4 to take the lead, but once he did nobody was going to catch the newest dad in the pit area.

Kreidler dominated for the win, Bradley came home second, Sharpsteen in for third, Chad Ayers fourth and Erica Bell in her first start of the season home for a top five finish.

Jeff Daugherty continued his dominance of the Creekside Entertainment Bandit division taking his second win in a row over Alpine, NY’s Pixie Kinner.  Daugherty in the Daugherty Auto Sales & Service #22 led from green to checkers.
