ALEX PAYNE BAGS MODIFIED WIN THREE AT OUTLAW SPEEDWAY AND TIGHTENS POINT BATTLE
Parsons makes it 2 wins in Crate Sportsman. Grant in Street Stocks and Kerrick in Hobby Stocks each roll to 4th wins of the season. DeCamp remains perfect in Youth Bandits as he wins 6th of year.
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Dundee, NY) After two consecutive weeks of poor feature finishes at Outlaw Speedway, Alex Payne showed the performance he had in winning the 2024 Modified Track Championship.
In the 30 lap Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modified feature, Cato, NY veteran Vince Vitale along with Outlaw Speedway owner/promoter, Bossman Tyler Siri of Horseheads would bring the star studded twenty-five car field to the opening green.
Payne of Hopewell who began the event outside row four wasted little time moving through traffic to the head of the class and would go on to his third win of the 2025 campaign and with the victory it gives him hope of repeating his 2024 class Track Championship.
The Hurricane, Steve Paine of Waterloo has found real speed in his 7x machine over the past month and moved from sixth position on the opening grid to finish a solid second place as he was chased across the line by Portageville’s Ron Cartwright Jr. who completed the podium after more than a month of struggles.
Fourth place went to Bobby Varin of Johnstown who began the feature in the eleventh slot as he will enter the last point night of the season on August 29 in second place.
Rounding the top five was current high point man, Mike Maresca and like Varin, Maresca is accustomed to starting mid pack each race night as he began the thirty-lap feature buried in the twelfth starting slot.
With Jeff Daugherty’s sixth place finish, unofficially it appears like the 2025 Modified Track Title will be decided between Maresca, Varin, Payne and Daugherty when racing resumes after a week on next Friday.
Paine has an outside shot mathematically; however, he will need big time help from the four other drivers in front of him.
Blake Parsons roared to his second Knapp and Schlappi Lumber 602 Crate Sportsman win of the season and became only the second driver in class to win more than one feature event thus far in 2025.
Parsons, a graduate of the Youth Bandit Division had won previously on June 20 and joins Donnie Lawson as the only driver in the Sportsman Division to pick-up two feature wins.
Quintin Buchanan who won his first Outlaw Feature on August 1 had a solid runner-up finish after starting the twenty-lap grind outside the front row with current high point man and multi times Outlaw Speedway Sportsman Track Champion, Chris Fisher of Bluff Point completing the podium after lining up ninth on the opening grid.
Fourth and fifth were claimed by AJ Lloyd and Justice Mayo, however Mayo was a DQ after completing the feature for not reporting to the scales for post event weigh-in.
Unofficially the top twelve in points all have a mathematical chance of winning the Knapp and Schlappi Lumber Sportsman Track Championship when the Double Point Season Point Finale is held on August 29.
Jimmy Grant continues to chip away at Glenn Whritenour’s Swarthout Recycling Street Stock point advantage and with his fourth trip to victory lane on this night he positions himself to have a chance at the Street Stock tile at the popular Yates County Oval.
Grant lined up inside row two at the wave of the opening green as Brett Crawford and Carl Cleveland brought the field to green, however the second gen Penn Yan speedster was the class of the field on this night holding off last year’s Track Champ, Gene Sharpsteen of Chemung who was second with Crawford having a great run for third.
Joe Giardina of Beaver Dams continues his rock solid 2025 Street Stock feature finishes by nailing fourth with fellow Beaver Dams competitor, Willy Easling rounding out the top five.
Heading into the Double Point Finale on August 29, Whritenour with eight feature wins is not a lock to win the title by any means as Grant, Sharpsteen, Easling and Gardina all are within striking distance to win the Swarthout Recycling Street Stock title.
A short but stout field of Addison, Corning, Hornell, Wellsville NAPA Hobby Stocks took to the Fast 4/10 of a Mile Oval for their traditional 20 lap feature with Mike Charette of Himrod and Marc Minutolo from Newark bringing the field to green.
Mr. Smooth, Minutolo would assume control early on and looked poised to pick up his fourth win of the campaign, but Danny Kerrick of Stanley has been on a roll the past two months and was not going to be denied victory on this night as he cleared Minutolo and went on to pick-up his fourth feature win of 2025 and stretch his small point advantage over Minutolo heading into the Double Point Finale in two weeks.
For Mr. Smooth he will need a stellar performance in two weeks as he trails Kerrick by ten markers with Jared Hill in third place and Jesse Balance fourth as the only threat to claim the NAPA Hobby Stock Title.
Another solid field of sixteen Winner’s Circle Deli Mini Stocks were in action and in their twenty lap A -Main. Kenneth Evans would lead the charge in the early going, but it was four-time 2025 feature winner, Jayson Smart of Branchport claiming apparent victory holding off class Rookie of the Year contender, Zach Daugherty of Elmira.
Coming across the line in third place was Evans who led early and dropped back to complete the podium.
July 18 and 25 Mini Stock feature winner, Craig DeCamp held on for fourth with Ray Hyer in a rare appearance completing the top five.
However, in post-race inspection, Smart was found guilty of an infraction and suffered a disqualification.
With the Smart DQ it drops him to third in the point battle behind Daugherty who leads and former Track Champ, The Nature Boy Mike Stone in second place with only that trio of drivers having a shot at the 2025 Track Title.
Last but not the least the Fritz Masonry Youth Bandits had their sixth official feature of the 2025 campaign and the end results were the same as the previous five as Kolton (Koli) DeCamp hitting pay dirt once again in their feature keeping him undefeated on the season and the odds on favorite to pick up the class title in a couple weeks when racing resumes at the track after a one week layoff.
Chasing DeCamp across the line was third gen driver, Connor Crane with Danica Hall completing the top three podium.
Kassitie Clugstone and Dodge Smith in only his third outing in class completed the five-car field.
Even though DeCamp has the advantage leading into the August 29 event, he still must start the event and make a good showing to claim the title as Clugstone, Hall and Crane are all still mathematically in the point chase.
Congratulations to all competitors.
On Friday, August 22 Outlaw Speedway has a scheduled night off then will return on August 29 for the Double Point Finale which will crown all the five-adult class plus the Bandit Track Champions for 2025.
The track will then head into Post Season Play with big money races in September and October with touring groups like the ULMS and ESS 360 Sprints making their way to the historic Yates County Speedway.
