Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.

(Dundee, NY) Traditionally the Outlaw Speedway Fall Nationals has been a two- night show to handle a multitude of classes that would compete.

However, a change in this year’s schedule will find the Fall Nationals with a new name, a one-night date, downsizing of classes and BIG BUCKS added to the format.

“When I first purchased this facility from the late Dean Hoag eight years ago, I scheduled two-night affairs for the Spring, Summer and Fall Nationals.  A few seasons ago I went to a one-night format with the Summer Nationals and this year I will do the same thing with the Fall Nationals by changing it from its customary Friday/Saturday event to just Friday night and using Saturday as the rain date.”  That according to Outlaw Speedway owner/promoter, Tyler Siri.

Siri then went on to say, “Money is tight for everyone including race teams, fans and sponsors.  By simplifying things, it saves everyone money plus I’m pouring piles of extra cash into the class purses.  This is a win/win for everyone.”

The Empire Super Sprints will race for a winners take of $4,220.20 with the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Rams racing for a whomping $7,220.20 to win in the Gunslinger 50 lap feature.  Also, the Sunrise Insulation and Knapp and Schlappi Lumber 602 Crate Sportsman will see the winner take home a check in the amount of $3,220.20 with the Brocks Bowl and Pizzeria Street Stocks winner walking off with $2,220.20.

Finally, the Winners Circle Deli 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks and the NAPA Hobby Stocks will each see winners hoisting a check for $1,220.20 when they are greeted in victory lane.

Lane’s Yamaha of Watkins Glen, St. Lawrence Radiology of Potsdam and Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing from Geneva will all partner to sponsor the block buster event which will have live pre-event broadcasts on 95 The Met in Elmira/Horseheads.

A draw-redraw format will be used for all classes of competition and should the Friday, September 22, 2023 show succumb to Mother Nature, the following night, September 23, 2023 will be used as the make-up date.

As the Cal Lane Memorial Event draws closer, more information including gate times for both pit and grandstand entry, weather updates along with ticket give aways will be posted at www.Facebook.com/OutlawSpeedwayLLC/.

Cal “Swivel” Lane was one of the very best to turn a wheel on the famous Yates County Oval now called Outlaw Speedway.  Throughout the sixties and seventies, Lane was one of the winningest drivers at the popular Dundee, NY speedway and a fan favorite to boot.

“Cal was a wonderful man, stated Tyler Siri.  He had a pleasant personality and was a crowd favorite.  Back when he was the man to beat, he always showed up with immaculate equipment, raced cleanly and took plenty of time to interact with fans, especially youngsters. Even after he hung up his driving helmet, he could always be found in the pit area talking shop with anyone that wanted to take a moment of his time.  They just do not come any better than Calvin.”

Earlier this season in April, The Cal Lane Memorial Spring Nationals was scheduled, however cold and wet conditions made it impossible to race, so Siri had to cancel the event.  However, a plan B immediately went into effect with Cal Lane’s name now being attached to the Fall Nationals for 2023.

“Cal was just too popular of a guy to not add his name to one of our more prestigious events here at the track.  We lost the Spring Nationals Event, but we can shift gears and put his memorial tribute on this seasons Fall Nationals.’  That once again according to track owner, Tyler Siri.

Camping is always free at Outlaw Speedway with complementary rides each race night on the tracks official Monster Truck, Outlaw Crusher.

A mouth-watering Chicken BBQ will await hungry drivers, crew members and fans when the gates open on race day.

A pair of watering holes will be open for those that are parched with the Turn 4 Tavern accommodating fans in the stands as well as the Outlaw Speedway Saloon located pit side.  A large selection of iced cold beer awaits.  Come Thirsty My Friends!
