For Immediate Release - July 31, 2023 (Dundee,NY) - There has been a long list of legends to come through the back gates of the racetrack in Dundee, New York. Since opening its gates in 1957 as Dundee Speedway drivers have continued to come and make a long standing name for themselves. The track has seen several name changes since 1957 but as the name changes the drivers and their names remain, and their legacy passed on to the new list of drivers tackling the 4/10 of a mile dirt track. Now named Outlaw Speedway owned by Tyler Siri sets out to remember numerous drivers who have been taken from us too soon.
On August 4, 2023 Gene Dupuy will be one of them to be remembered. Gene Dupuy better known as “Mr. Outside” or “The Veteran from Watkins Glen” started his racing career in 1969. He raced in several divisions throughout his racing career including street stocks, late models, 4 cylinders and pro trucks briefly, all proudly sporting the famous “13x”. Dupuy was a force to be reckoned with. His fire and drive to compete led him to multiple wins and championships at Dundee Speedway (aka Black Rock Speedway, now Outlaw Speedway), Skyline Raceway, Canandaigua Speedway (now Land of Legends Raceway) and various other tracks around New York State. After his career he made sure to stick around the dirt tracks and go to races with his daughters who also shared his passion for racing. Gene continued to devote time to Outlaw Speedway as “The Scaleman” for several years. You could easily spot Dupuy as he usually had a Swisher Sweet cigar in his mouth and a pack in his shirt pocket. Dupuy continued his duties as “The Scaleman” until he passed away in March of 2020.
Following Gene's death, Siri stepped up to the plate and agreed to have a race in memory of Dupuy. Daughters of Dupuy - Karla, Jessica, Amanda, and Megan spend all year prepping to help remember their dad in the best way possible. The first memorial race was scheduled for May of 2020 but due to Covid-19 it was unable to be completed. 2021 saw the first memorial race for Dupuy and has since continued.
The Gene Dupuy Memorial is centered around the Street Stock division as that was one of Dupuy’s prime classes during his career. The Brock's Bowl and Pizzeria Street Stocks will be racing for a big check of $1313 and trophy courtesy of Wicked Tees. Dylan Cecce was crowned victorious in 2021 and Shane Wolf Jr. took the #77 machine to victory lane in 2022. 2023 could see a repeat winner or a new one. Wolf Jr. and Chris Woodard currently are tied in points. Woodard has several podium finishes this season but could potentially get his first win of the season and add his name to the list of winners. Cecce and the 18* machine made a return to Outlaw Speedway and swept the field three weekends in a row. CJ Guerreri and his CJ1 car can’t be counted out as he’s a front runner as well and could find his first win of the season.
This year the top 13 starting spots will be determined by a “revenge draw”. The top 13 drivers from the heat races will stand amongst each other on the front stretch and draw a number. Then they get to choose which competitor standing next to them gets to start in that spot. Also on the card for the ‘Gene Dupuy Memorial Night’ are the Friendly Big Block/Small Block Modifieds, Sunrise Insulation/Knapp and Schlappi Sportsman, Swarthout Recycling Rookie Sportsman, NAPA Hobby Stocks, Winner’s Circle Deli 4 Cylinders, and Fritz Masonry Youth Bandits.
Each paying division will see at $13 bonus to the winner's payout to represent Dupuy’s race number, 13x. Admission for the ‘Gene Dupuy Memorial’ is set at $15 for adult general admission and $13 for seniors. Pit admission will be $40. Grandstand gates will open at 5:30pm with pit gates opening at 5pm. Racing will start at 7:30pm! Free camping is also available at Outlaw Speedway.
