(Dundee, NY) When it comes to iconic racers that once competed at the Outlaw Speedway you can add Gene Dupuy to the list.

Having spent most of his legendary career at the historic Yates County oval, Dupuy was one of the tracks biggest supporters over his entire adult life.

Even after retirement from driving, Dupuy was at the track working in some capacity most recently running the infield scales with his daughter Megan.

His dedication has not gone noticed as one of Dupuy’s close friends, former competitor and big supporter of Outlaw Speedway, Terry Wheat has stepped in and organized an event to honor the legendary Dupuy and his number 13x machine.

“I’ve known Gene for most of my life and he was just one heck of a guy, claimed Wheat.  It came as a total shock to the local racing community when Gene passed away very unexpectedly.  I immediately got ahold of Outlaw Speedway track owner, Tyler Siri and said that their needed to be a special for this guy.”

After collaboration between both Wheat and Siri a date of Friday, May 1, 2020 has been designated for the Gene Dupuy Street Stock Memorial at the Outlaw Speedway.  May 1 will also coincide with what would have been Dupuy’s 69th Birthday.

“Terry came to me with this idea and the track is all in with it.  Not only was Gene a loyal employee of mine he also has a real good race history at this facility going back to when it was run by the Fair Board in the 1970’s.  That according to Siri.

Wheat will be designated as the lead on this event and he will handle any additional sponsorship for the Dupuy Memorial as well as soliciting lap money for the 30-lap affair.

“I’m accepting lap money for this event.  I’m going to make sure it gets distributed equally so that most or all drivers get an opportunity to get a piece of the pie.  The event will pay $1,300 to the winner and lap #13 will pay the leader an additional $130.00. That was Gene’s number and we are going to pay tribute to that.  Wheat went on to say that, Gene was one of the icons of this area. He was in the era of Tom Smalley, Harold Bates, Doug Caslin and Bruce Hall. He was a full fender guy at hart and that’s why we have chosen the Street Stocks as the class to honor him.

Throughout his illustrious career Dupuy ran primarily Late Models all over New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.  Venues like Woodhull, Weedsport, Five Mile Point, Skyline and Penn Can. It was not uncommon to see him show up at most any race venue.   At one point he tried a 320 Modified but was lured back into a full fender Street Stock machine as he wound down his driving career.

“This is something that needs to be done, claimed Wheat.  He dedicated his life to Outlaw. Weather it was Dundee Speedway, Dundee Raceway Park, Black Rock Speedway or Outlaw.  If there was a race, he was there weather competing, helping a fellow driver or working at the track. No matter how mad he got at the track, he would always be back there the following week.  The track was his life.”

Anyone that would like to help in sponsoring the event in any capacity, weather its lap money, hard charger, hard luck, best drive or contributing the already hefty $1,300 winner’s share please contact Terry Wheat at the enclosed address or phone number.

“My primary focus is on making sure all 30 laps are sponsored first then we can go from there, stated Wheat.  I want to make this a big deal for the Street Stock drivers. This is an awesome class with great competition, and it will be the perfect way to pay tribute to a wonderful man, Gene Dupuy.”

Terry Wheat can be reached in a multitude of ways. On his personnel cell phone at 607-329-5738 or friend him on Facebook at Terry Wheat.  You can also email at tewheat1@yahoo.com.

The event is scheduled for Friday, May 1, 2020.  Should the races get postponed either to the ongoing concerns surrounding the Corona Virus or to Mother Nature a makeup date will be announced.
