(Dundee, NY) – In what has been a frustrating season for Ron Cartwright Jr.’s No. 2b team, Friday was one of the highlights as he cruised away for his third Outlaw Speedway victory of 2016. Superior Plus Energy Services Night also saw Stacy Jackson, Rich Michael Jr., Jason Knowles, Chuck Winslow and Jordan Bacon grace Outlaw Victory Lane.
Brady Fultz led the opening lap of the Friendly Dodge & Ford Modified thirty-lap event, but Cartwright didn’t let that last very long. Cartwright took over on lap two and powered away from the field in a dominant performance.
Steve Paine was quickly working his way through the field, as he is trying to lock up track championship number nine in 2016. Paine made it three-wide on lap two off turn four to pick up two positions early, after starting sixteenth.
The battle early for second was a great race between Fultz, Joe Dgien and Gary Tomkins. Tomkins was coming off an incredibly frustrating week on August 19th, and would ultimately come one spot short of pulling off a win by finishing in the runner-up position.
Championship point contender Alan Johnson started to see the championship slip away on Friday as he suffered a flat tire on lap eight. Johnson’s crew changed the tire and got ‘AJ Slideways’ back out to finish seventh in the final rundown.
‘The Doctor’ Danny Johnson found himself in contention for the runner-up position with ten laps to go with Fultz and Tomkins. Paine had also moved up to the top five spot on lap twenty-one. But on lap twenty-two, Johnson’s left rear wheel became detached from the Shakelton NAPA Auto Parts No. 27J, ending a great run.
On the restart, Cartwright pulled away and led by a full straightaway at the checkered flag. Tomkins was second, Paine third, Fultz fourth and Dgien rounding out the top five.
Due to championship night being double points, Paine could not clinch by any means but will essentially need a solid night without failures to claim his second straight and ninth overall Outlaw Speedway track championship.
The Crate Sportsman feature saw Stacy Jackson take a brand new ride for his team to Victory Lane on Friday night. The race for the points championship has been hotly contested in the Crate Sportsman division this season, and Chris Fisher took a big step forward in his quest for his first Crate title at Outlaw.
Jackson led the field off turn two to grab the early lead- a position he would never relinquish throughout the event. Fisher saw disaster on lap three as he would have a tire go down after contact with another competitor on the track.
Brent Ayers and Frank Guererri Jr. waged war for the second position throughout the event, with Ayers ultimately winning that war. Guererri did have his best run of 2016 though, a third place finish since recently joining the Crate Sportsman from his start in the Crate Late Model earlier in the year.
Problems were aplenty for all of the title contenders on Friday night, as Dale Welty and Tommy Collins Jr. both had issues during their feature go. Welty came up slow in turn four on lap fifteen, sending him to the work area. Collins got caught up in a multi-car accident on lap seventeen with Mike Buchanan and Danny Johnson Jr.
Fisher made progress through the field after his altercation, allowing him to extend the point lead going toward championship night. Jackson would lead by a straightaway at the checkered flag over Ayers, Guererri, AJ Lloyd and Todd Hayward.
In the Crate Late Model feature, Alan Chapman and Brian Knowles took off at the green flag, side by side in turn one and making three wide in turn three, Chapman would pull away for the lead on lap two. After a “battle of the blood lines” between Brian and Jason Knowles on lap three, Brian would take the lead on the backstretch.
Bob Buono called for the first caution of the event after he spun around in turn three on the third lap. The second caution of the night followed just after the restart on lap four as Jason Knowles went sideways in turn one.
Brian Knowles took off at the restart, taking a half-lap lead on second place on lap five, as Chapman and Jason Knowles battled for the second spot.
During the battle for second, Chapman and Knowles made contact, causing Chapman to spin out on the backstretch, bringing on the third caution of the event and sending Knowles to the back of the pack.
After Chapman headed pit side on lap eight, the “battle of the blood lines” continued as Jason and Brian Knowles battled for the first place position through laps ten, eleven, and twelve. Jason Knowles pulled ahead, taking the lead on lap thirteen, and would hold his lead for the remainder of the twenty-lap-event.
Jason Knowles would take the checkered followed by Brian Knowles, and Bob Buono.
Nick MacMillan, visiting driver from North Carolina, led the field to green for the Farmers Insurance IMCA Modified feature, followed by Brad Smith.
The first lap would not be completed after contact between Smith and MacMillan in turn three, calling for the first caution of the twenty-lap event. A three-wide battle in turns one and two on the restart between Rich Michael Jr, MacMillan, and Brandon Smith led Michael Jr. to the lead.
A second caution on lap one sent point leader Shawn Bruce pit side with a right rear flat. Michael Jr. would take the lead on the second restart, with Brandon Smith taking the second spot on lap two.
After a battle through laps nine and ten for the third spot, MacMillan lost his right front wheel in turn four on lap eleven, calling for the third caution of the event. MacMillan was taken off the track by the hook, ending his night prematurely.
The lap eleven restart went to the No. 17 of Michael Jr. once again, with Scott Sebring making a three-wide move with Brandon Smith and Rich Karlnoski coming off turn four.
With five to go, Michael Jr. held his lead followed by Smith, Karlnoski, Sebring, and Phil Yaw. Michael Jr. pulled ahead with a straightaway lead at the white flag, leading him to take the checkered for his second win of the season in a car he has been shaking down to take to the Supernationals in Boone, Iowa.
Chuck Winslow made it seven victories total at Outlaw Speedway on Friday night, as he continues to cruise away to the Creekside Entertainment Street Stock track championship.
JJ Kreidler and Jared Hill led the field to green in the twenty-lap event with Kreidler and Hill swapping the lead on the two opening laps. A lap three caution allowed Winslow to move into second and on the back bumper of Hill for the restart.
Winslow would make his way by the Beauty Craft, Turn 5 Live No. 93 to take the lead, with Kreidler remaining in the third spot. Bob Buono made his way up through the field and into the top five by the halfway point, driving for Mashewske Motorsports. Buono would finish second at the checkered flag, but would not pass post-race tech inspection.
Winslow had to survive a lap seventeen caution and restart, but it was no trouble for the car and driver that has just been flawless in 2016. The all-powerful No. 61 graced Outlaw Victory Lane one more time on Friday, with yet one more chance to do it again coming up this Friday on Championship Night.
The Four Cylinder feature got off to a rough start with two caution flags before a lap was even posted. The second caution was for a three-car accident in turn three, drawing the red flag. ShiAnn Labar’s No. 42 was involved with heavy damage, with Labar suffering a undisclosed leg injury.
Labar was treated by safety officials and Outlaw Speedway EMS staff, and then transferred to a local hospital by Dundee Ambulance for further treatment of her injury. She was later released after evaluation at a local hospital.
Due to the lengthiness of the caution and red flag period, the Four Cylinder feature was postponed to this Friday night. Their feature from Friday will be first on the schedule at 7:00PM on Championship Night.
Jordan Bacon dominated the Bandit feature, finding himself in Victory Lane for the eighth consecutive week. Austin LaBar led the field to the green, after a short battle Bacon would take the lead on the first lap from the fourth starting spot.
Steven Perkins III would take it pit side with problems in the No. 38 and later return. At the half way mark, Bacon held almost a half of a lap lead over the No. 42 of LaBar. “Burnin’ Bacon” took the checkers for his eighth win followed by LaBar and Joey Clark.
This week at Outlaw Speedway is not only Championship Night, but Law Enforcement Night as well. Law Enforcement officials with proper ID will be admitted free of charge to the races this coming Friday.
Track championships will be decided in a special format, with championship night offering double points. Teams and fans will no doubt be on the edge of their seat for the event that will close out the 2016 regular season at Outlaw Speedway.
