(Dundee, NY) – After Alan Johnson grabbed his first win of the season last week, all eyes turned to Steve Paine as the next veteran driver and point leader who needed to deposit his first winner’s check of 2016.  Mission accomplished.

Paine took the lead at the halfway mark and drove away to his first of the season and ninety-fourth victory in his storied career at the Dundee oval.  An eight-time champion of the Friendly Dodge and Ford Modifieds, Paine appears primed and ready to close in on his ninth championship at the track.

Paine came into the night with a twenty-eight point lead over Alan Johnson, who used his win last week to bump up into the second spot.  There is certainly still a month and a half of racing left to go, but Paine extended his lead with Johnson finishing fourth Friday night.

Theresa Multer from Mac’s Dairy Bar & Mini Golf waved the green flag on the twenty-car Modified field as Jim LaRock and Joe Dgien led the field to the green.  Dgien would grab the early lead, with LaRock maintaining in the top five for the first half of the event.

Derrick Podsiadlo didn’t make it one complete lap before trouble found the Penn Yan Express Stop No. 21 Friday night.  Cars jammed up and were moving around for position, when a car made contact with Podsiadlo, who was running the outside lane.  The contact sent Podsiadlo hard into the backstretch wall, ending his night and bringing out the first yellow.

The caution would come back out on lap five when Scott Boudinot, Brian Swarthout and Dale Welty who was back in his Larry Kennison-owned No. 9x spun together in turn two.  Swarthout’s rare appearance at the ‘Fast Four-Tenths-Mile’ was even more eventful on the restart as he would find himself facing the wrong way on the front stretch.

The race for the lead started heating up as the next eight laps would go caution-free with Lawson chasing down Dgien for the lead.  While that battle intensified, Brady Fultz had a problem on the No. 70 that turned out to be the power steering, which drew the caution flag on lap thirteen.

The restart really had things get exciting as Lawson was on the attack looking for the lead.  Exiting turn four, Lawson tried to clear Dgien and take the low line into turn one.  There was contact with Dgien, pointing Lawson for the first turn implement tire.  Lawson sped up and made a last ditch effort- missing the tire but getting completely out of shape in the first turn.

With Lawson sideways, Dgien couldn’t slow down fast enough and made contact with the front end of Lawson’s car, causing heavy damage to the front end of the Joe Dgien Trucking No. 3x and ending his night.

At this point, Paine was up to third and had a front-row seat for the melee in turn one.  He spoke about what happened in front of him while being interviewed in Victory Lane.

“I saw the 11 cause the caution, which was why I didn’t agree with him being on the front row for that restart,” said Paine.  “That’s all I saw and all I know.  But it was lucky for me as we cleared both of them, or we would have been a part of the pile.”

After the race went back to green, Paine went to work attacking the Yates County dirt oval as he had ninety-three times before.  Justin Wright moved into the second position but didn't really have anything for Paine.  Gary Tomkins moved his Tracey Road Equipment No. 84 up into the third spot, which is where he would finish.

Paine would get the win over Wright, Tomkins, Alan Johnson who recovered from an early flat tire and Cory Costa.

"Tonight was really good and it’s been really good,” said Paine.  “It sure is fun to drive.”

The Crate Sportsman feature event was rough and tumble with Stacy Jackson scoring his second Outlaw Speedway victory of 2016.  Jackson started up front and stayed up front, surviving several caution flags during the event.

Stern warnings were sent to the drivers via the one way radio.  After multiple caution flags for spun cars and accidents, officials warned that they were going to use the black flag to clean up the racing on track.  When there was an accident not even one lap later, one driver was sent to the pits via the black flag from head starter Steve Kellogg.

Once the black flag was brought out, there was a long stretch of green flag racing that saw Jackson pull away out front.  Brett Buono worked and worked to claw his way into the second position.  Buono would now set his sights on Jackson for the lead.

As Buono set up his pass for the lead as the field came down for the white flag, a car spun and brought out the final caution flag of the event.  On the restart, Buono took off after Jackson through the first turn and down the backstretch.  As the pair raced into turn three, Jackson washed out to the top side of the track opening the door for Buono.

Buono tried to make a move, but would lose the drag race to the stripe by just 0.114 seconds as one of the closest finishes this season.  Jackson would say in Outlaw Victory Lane that he was lucky to have even made it to the finish.

"The car was cutting out real bad," said Jackson.  "I think it may be something in the fuel cell or even not enough fuel.  We let Cartwright drive the car in the Modified feature to score points and we didn't take into consideration how many laps he did out there."

In the Farmers Insurance IMCA Modifieds, there was a brand new winner in Victory Lane at the end of twenty laps.  Scott Sebring, son of former Modified shoe Tim Sebring, took home his first checkered flag since racing at the Dundee, NY facility.  Sebring has raced in the Street Stocks and IMCA division over the last several years, but the last month has been some of their best efforts with a fast race car and several top five runs.

Rodney Morgan led the race from the drop of the green flag, but Sebring gave chase in the battle for the lead.  Sebring had an opportunity to make a move on Morgan, but was blocked by a lap car who was trying to get out of Morgan's way and didn't see Sebring.  That allowed Morgan to put some distance on the rest of the top five, but as Morgan reached lap traffic again, Sebring are up that lead in a matter of two laps.

Morgan reached a pair of slower machines that were battling side by side for position, which set up what some have been calling the move of the season for Sebring.  Sebring greased up the sides of the family-owned No. 44 and threaded the needle three-wide with the lap cars to take the lead with five laps to go.  Once out front, Sebring kept all other competitors at arm's reach to collect his first win at the track his family has raced at for years.

"This win is so special," said Sebring with a big smile.  "I've wanted to do this for my dad so bad, he puts so much effort into getting us to the racetrack.  We couldn't do it without 'The Wizard.'"

The Creekside Entertainment Street Stocks also saw a first time winner in 2016, as Quinn Sutherland parked the Jim and Sharon Schuyler-owned No. 57J in 'The Lane' on Friday night.  Rookie Jayson Smart led the field to green and would go on to lead the first six laps of the event.

Sutherland and Jared Hill, who won a feature behind the wheel of the No. 57J earlier this season, started mid-pack and were the cars to beat based on speed.  Hill later said that this feature, which went wire-to-wire, came down to who got to the lead first.

Sutherland got to the lead first, worked lap traffic with ease and cruised away for the victory.  Hill had to pick his way a little more meticulously through traffic and would have to settle for a second place effort.  Aftwerwards, Sutherland was appreciative of the win, but has a bigger win circled on the calendar next week.

"It's awesome that Jim put me in this car, it's been so fast now that we have the bugs worked out," said Sutherland.  "But next week's race for Jeffy (Searles) is the big one we want to win."

The four cylinder division saw a driver whose team has had some success this season, see their fearless leader find his own success as Brian Grant Jr. parked the No. 4D6 in Outlaw Victory Lane.  Grant was the class of the fieldon Friday night in this ultra-competitive division, winning the twenty-lap feature event.

Chad Ayers had a brand new motor in his No. 9A, finishing in the runner up position over Bruce Kinner, Codie Baker and Scott Bradley.

"We've just had bad luck on my car this season," said Grant in Victory Lane.  "Between bad luck and flat tires this year, it's nice to be standing here at the end of the feature."

'Burnin' Bacon' Jordan Bacon made it three-for-three in 2016, winning his third Winners Circle Deli Bandit ten-lap feature in a row.  Bacon jumped out into the early lead and never looked back.  Austin Labar was fast early, but spun to the infield before the halfway mark, relegating him to a fourth place finish.

Bacon led Steven Perkins III, Joey Clark and Labar to the checkered flag.

Coming up this Friday at Outlaw Speedway, Cam Sutherland and Sons Construction, as well as the Searles family will present the second annual Jeff Searles Memorial Night at the speedway.  Race fans are encouraged to bring red rags to the track to wave during the 'wave lap' before each feature event.  Drivers are asked to tie a red rag to the passenger side of their race vehicles in memory of the colorful character that was 'Jeffy' Searles.  Searles was well-known in the pit area for waving his red rag in the second turn pit grandstands to cheer on his favorites.

Last season's memorial races were a big hit amongst the grandstand and pit areas and will be again this Fridaynight.  The Crate Late Models will rejoin the field of divisions after having a week off to race a RUSH series event at Ransomville Speedway.

The Friendly Dodge & Ford Big Block/Small Block Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, Crate Late Models, Farmers Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Creekside Entertainment Street Stocks, Four Cylinders and Winners Circle Deli Bandits will all be in competition.

General admission will be $12 for adults 13 and up, Senior Citizens $10 with children 12 and under always being Free at Outlaw Speedway.  Pit passes will be $30 on Friday night.
