(DUNDEE N.Y.)- Last Friday night at Outlaw Speedway, fans had the opportunity to meet their favorite drivers face to face, for Pepsi autograph night. Drivers pulled their cars onto the front stretch as fans and kids made their way down from the grandstands to talk to drivers between the heats and features.
IMCA Modified driver Rich Karlnoski, #55x was pulled aside on the front stretch and was asked how he likes the opportunity to meet his fans, and if he thinks we should do things like this more often?
“Oh it’s fun, I enjoy it. We should do some more stuff for the kids,” Karlnoski explained, “anything we can do to make those kids get down here and get on the race track, you know we used to do kiddie rides, used to load the kids up on the cars, and drive them around the track. Anything to keep them interested.”
Amongst the excited kids running from one driver to another on the track, a couple of them were willing to give their opinions on autograph night. 13-year-old Dylan Morseman stated, “it’s actually pretty awesome, this is my first time I get to meet any of the drivers out here.”
Siblings, McKenna and Jacob, ages 8 and 9, said that meeting their favorite drivers was cool and they would like to do it more often. 8-year-old McKenna stated “AJ Lloyd is my favorite driver because we usually go to his shop when our car has something wrong with it and he fixes it for us.” McKenna’s brother Jacob also commented on AJ Llyod, “our dad knows him so we really like to cheer for him here and at Canandaigua.”
While all the drivers were signing autographs for kids and fans, Sportsman driver Zach Ziegenhagen, #104, decided to put his own twist on it. While signing autographs for his fans, he also handed out sharpies to let the kids sign the side of his car. When asked his opinion on the experience, Ziegenhagen stated, “Meeting my fans is pretty cool, I’ve never been able to do something like this. Definitely something we should do at least once a year.”
He was asked in the interview why he decided to let fans sign his car? He explained, “my crew man’s girlfriend, Cassie Stetzel, actually said that nobody has done it for a while and it’s a big thing that fans like to do, so I figured, why not?”
From the perspective of fans and drivers, autograph night was successful and fun for all of those involved, and something that would like to be seen more often at Outlaw Speedway.
