(DUNDEE, N.Y.) – Getting behind the wheel of a Big Block Modified at 16 years old was all it took to get AJ Johnson hooked on racing.

The 58-year-old driver out of Middlesex, NY, started his racing career at Weedsport Speedway in 1974. Johnson dedicates all of his time to racing, when asked in an interview what he does outside the track, he stated, “this is what I do, I do this full time and I work on the cars.”

In his interview, Johnson was asked what keeps him motivated to keep racing, “I still have fun doing it, it is a lot of work,” he explained “and it’s what I do, I’ve been doing it for 44 years now, so I’m just trying to keep going.”

Before racing started last Friday night, July 8th, Johnson had yet to capture a feature win at Outlaw Speedway this season. With multiple 2nd and 3rd place finishes, he stated that to park it in victory lane, he just needs to be in the right place at the right time, and keep the car running well.

During the Modified feature on Friday night, a caution on lap twenty-six led race leader, Tyler Siri, #5* to the pits. After an exciting 4-lap battle to the finish, Johnson was able to pull away from 2nd and 3rd and take the win, and extending his career-winning streak to 42 years.

Johnson has now had a feature win every season he has been racing, dating back to 1975. Only Billy Pauch and Brett Hearn are in the neighborhood of that record, but are several seasons behind Johnson.

The win also moved Johnson into second place in the point standings going into Mac’s Dairy Bar Night this Friday.
