For Immediate Release - May 28th, 2016 -
(Dundee, NY) - Ron Cartwright Jr. has been a fixture at Outlaw Speedway over the course of his Modified career. He leaned heavy on that experience and all the laps he has at Outlaw to capture his first victory of 2016 Friday night.
Corning, NY driver Cory Costa and Lee Bills led the field to Steve Kellogg's green flag for the Friendly Dodge & Ford Modifieds and it was Costa taking the early advantage. Costa, driving the Addison Eagles No. 88 for car owner Herbie Wright, gave that ride an incredible run by leading the first twelve laps.
But not far behind Costa was Cameron Mills, NY pilot Joe Dgien. Dgien had an extremely fast car underneath the No. 3x on Friday night, with Dgien powering by for the lead on lap thirteen. In fact, Dgien clocked in the fastest lap of the night Friday with a time of 15.637 seconds- averaging 92.089 miles per hour around the ‘Fast Four-Tenths-Mile.'
Dgien stretched the lead to three car lengths before the race's first caution fell on lap sixteen. That would bunch up the field and give Ron Cartwright Jr. the caution he needed to close in on Costa and Dgien for the restart. Brady Fultz and Justin Wright had a great race going within the top five at that point as well.
On the restart though, it was the veteran Cartwright who went to work on two of the young guns in the Modified ranks at Outlaw Speedway. Cartwright quickly disposed of Costa and then turned his attention in the DJ Beardley Electric No. 2b to the leader Dgien.
Cartwright would make his move on lap eighteen and start to pull away from the rest of the field. Tyler Siri encountered problems on the Superior Crushing No. 5* ride, drawing the caution on lap twenty-one. Siri was unable to continue, which dashed Cartwright's chances at taking home the $250 bounty that was placed on Siri.
Another caution with five laps to go for Dgien, who came up lame with a flat left rear tire, allowed Costa, Alan Johnson and Steve Paine to close in for a five lap dash to the finish.
It took Johnson two laps to get around Costa for second, which gave Cartwright enough of an advantage to drive away for his first win of the 2016 season. Johnson settled for a runner-up finish, Paine got by Costa for third, Costa fourth and ‘The Doctor' shook a rough start in the heat race to rally for a top five finish.
"This car has been pretty good for the last couple weeks," said Cartwright of the car they purchased by auction at the National Parts Peddler in the offseason.
"Last week we had a tire go down with six to go, I'm glad it didn't happen this week. I have to thank my daughter- she drew the number again tonight."
Cartwright's daughter has been well known to draw a great number for her father in the past. When she does draw for him, daddy brings home the bacon in Victory Lane.
The Crate Sportsman saw Montour Falls native Dale Welty take home his second win of 2016 in quite dominant fashion. Welty took the lead on lap seven and never gave the competition a chance to even close in to challenge for the victory.
Chris Fisher and Ross Vleck led the field to green for twenty-five laps and it was Fisher, who had to put a ton of hours in the shop this week just to make it to the track, leading the first six laps. Welty snuck by on lap seven and set sail in his unsponsored No. 123.
"Neither of our cars have any sponsors and it's a struggle to get by, but I think we are proving what we can do on a low budget," said Welty in Victory Lane.
Welty's car was lightning quick on corner entry of turn one. No other car was attacking the first turn like he was and that proved to be the difference for the second time in three events.
"I can go so hard into turn one and in the past I've always had to wait for the front end. Not any more!"
Welty got the win over Fisher, AJ Lloyd who had a strong run for third, Casey Pavlick and Stacey Jackson who has needed a good run after a terrible start to the 2016 season.
Jason Knowles didn't have the best night at McKean County on Thursday night. A tore up racecar and damaged pride left ‘The Jet' and his crew with a long road to hoe on Friday just to get to the track.
"It was tore up, rebuilt is an understatement," said Knowles after leading the RUSH Crate Late Model race from green to checkered.
"We started at 8AM and left the house at 6:05 tonight, yeah we really cut it close. If it wasn't for these guys, I wouldn't even be here doing this."
Knowles started on the hammer and took off right from the drop of the green flag. The Crate Late Models ran off 20 laps in just five minutes and thirty seconds, with all drivers giving each other space to race and acclimating to the Dundee oval that added the late models for 2016.
Knowles drove away from John Waters to get the win, Adam Depuy had a solid third place effort, Chris Fleming was fourth and Mike Wonderling rounded out the top five.
The Creekside Entertainment Street Stock division was by and large the most exciting feature of the night. Carl Cleveland and Jared Hill brought the field to the green flag with Hill getting the jump to turn one.
Hill would lead the first four laps but another Potter Chassis, the Potter house car driven by Dylan Cecce, was hot on the trail. Cecce and Hill battled back and forth for several laps, side by side as these two drivers have the utmost respect for one another on and off the track. It showed, and treated fans to a thrilling race.
Cecce would nose ahead in the lead on lap 5 and started to pull away to a three to four length car lead. Meanwhile, behind Cecce, Chuck Winslow and Jared Hill were doing battle for the second spot. Both drivers are veterans of the division and continued the great show that Hill and Cecce had started in the opening laps.
Winslow would move to second place on lap seven and set out to run down Cecce, in what he hoped would be a repeat of Thursday Night Thunder two weeks ago when Winslow passed Cecce in turn four for the win on the last lap.
"Yeah that one hurt a little bit," said Cecce of the opening night second place finish. "Tonight racing with Jared and running the top was great, a lot of fun."
Cecce had to slice through lap traffic at the end to go on and score the victory. Cecce made it through traffic better than Winslow and Hill did, which was the difference in the closing laps. When asked if getting through the traffic was a testament to his growing experience behind the wheel?
"Not really, it's more about luck and hitting them at the right time. I felt like it helped me. How about Tyler Siri though? It was a little rough in the heat but they really fixed it and what a beautiful place to race here."
Cecce got the win, Winslow and Hill battled tooth and nail through traffic with Winslow taking second. Gene Balmer ran fourth with CJ Guererri filling the top five.
The Decker Insurance Agency IMCA Modifieds got off to a rough start on Friday night, as caution fever overshadowed the great racing that took place on the longer green flag runs.
The field was slowed numerous times before getting to lap ten's halfway point. Race officials had no choice but to shorten the race to 15 laps to keep the show moving along. ‘Dick in the Dirt' Rich Karlnoski took the lead of the race from Brad Smith, who led the opening five circuits. Karlnoski did a fantastic job of holding off Smith in the Lethal Chassis No. 76.
With just a few laps to go, Keith Lamphere started making a fierce charge to the front as he and Jake Maynard stormed through traffic in a battle for the third spot. Lamphere would win the drag race to the line for third with Maynard having to settle for fourth.
Karlnoski would race away to the win over Smith. Tony Harris had an up and down night, having to come from the back of the pack twice to score a top five on Friday night.
"I just can't leave well enough alone," said Karlnoski in Victory Lane. "My boys and I cut the (edited) end off this car over the winter and now we've got it figured out." Karlnoski also shared that he has a grandchild on the way and appeared pretty happy to make that announcement.
The Four Cylinders did double-duty this week and it was Codie Baker once again showing the field how it's done in the make up feature event. Baker put some new tires on the front of the car, after taking off a pair of seven year old tires, and it sure made the difference as Baker pulled away in the end to get the twenty-lap victory.
Zach Teed had a great piece in his No. 6 on Friday and finishes second over Dan Smart, Bruce Kinner and Chris Mashewske.
"It was hooking up real good tonight," said Baker. "The tires I ran last time, we've run those for almost seven years. It was time for new rubber."
In the regularly scheduled feature, Scott Bradley led the field for the first three laps. Ray Hyer, driving for Brian Grant Jr. had a solid set up underneath his No. 4D. Hyer would race out to a lead that nobody could touch. Until the caution came out on the last lap.
Hyer would have to survive a hard charge from Chad Ayers to score the victory, Hyer's first in quite some time at the Dundee oval. Ayers had to settle for second, Corky Grant third, Del Cummings fourth and Zach Teed with two top fives on the night.
"It took a lot of getting used to again," said Hyer about getting reacquainted with the four cylinder division. "I made some adjustments and the car and the track all just came together."
Friday night was a night that Winners Circle Deli Bandit driver Steven Perkins III will not soon forget. It's also highly likely that the fans won't be forgetting that one either.
Perkins, just 12-years-old, conducted his winner's interview from last week's show just before taking to the track for their ten-lap feature event.
The event was dominated by Horseheads, NY lady racer Kayley Potrzebowski. Kayley had the Scentsy.com, Pro Signs No. 72x running a great line and keeping the competition at arm's reach.
As the leaders Potrzebowski, Cole Youse and Perkins approached Austin Labar's No. 42, Potrzebowski dove to the low line to make the pass. Labar and Potrzebowski made contact, sending Potrzebowski into the wall. Potrzebowski then made contact with Cole Youse's machine, flattening his right front tire. The contact with the wall flattened her rear tire and would require a tow back to the pits.
Labar also pulled off the track, leaving only Perkins on the track. With only one car left on the track when the race was ready to restart, track officials threw the checkered flag. Giving Perkins his second win in-a-row and second career Outlaw Speedway victory.
"That was weird," said Perkins. "They told me I was the leader and to head over to Victory Lane."
Next week at Outlaw Speedway, Elm Chevrolet presents DARE Night as representatives from the local DARE program and Yates County Sheriff's Office will be on hand with a booth behind the grandstands. Race time is set for 6:45PM with the Winners Circle Deli Bandits taking the first green flag for their ten lap feature.
The Creekside Entertainment Street Stocks will do double-duty as they make up their May 20th feature event at 7:00PM Sharp.
