(DUNDEE, N.Y.) – If the open practice session on Friday night was any indication- 2016 is going to be a renaissance season for the Yates County clay oval in Dundee.
150 fans in the grandstands and 50 race cars filled the revamped pit area for their first chance to check out all the improvements that are taking place at Outlaw Speedway. Prior to practice firing up, construction crews were working away on the framing for the new sponsor billboards that will line the fencing along State Route 14A.
There was also a crew working hard on residing the covered grandstands and grandstand concession areas. New gravel from RK Howell Gravel Products could be found in various areas around the property. Freshly painted walls, a leveled out infield ready for hydro seed and brand new fencing from Butler Fence were just a few of the improvements on display.
Then there was the racing surface itself.
“We are really happy with how well the new clay held up tonight,” said Outlaw Speedway owner Tyler Siri. “I know a lot of people were worried about us putting the new clay down so soon, but the track needed it badly and for our first try at it we are really happy. Next Friday is going to be awesome.”
A lot of the credit for the surface goes to Robbie Conklin and his track prep crew that includes the Povoski brothers who have been staples at the facility for more than a decade.
50 cars filled the pit area with all of Outlaw’s weekly divisions represented including the Friendly Dodge and Ford Big Block/Small Block Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, Crate Late Models, Creekside Entertainment Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and 4 Cylinders.
Bryan Howland, Kyle Drum and Brandon Kidd were also on hand to shake down their 360 sprint cars. Outlaw Speedway starts off 2016 with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints on April 22nd and follows that up with the Patriot Sprint Tour on Friday May 6th, just two weeks later.
The opening Outlaw Spring Nationals on Friday April 22nd will be historic as the Modifieds will race for $3,000-to-win in leg number one of three for the Insinger Performance/Sunoco Race Fuels Outlaw Challenge.
If the Modified winner that night can also win the Outlaw Fall Nationals and Dutch Hoag National Open, they will take home an eye-popping $25,000. The Friendly Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ford Modifieds will also race for $2,000-to-win on a weekly basis and receive a minimum of $200 for taking the green flag. The track champion of the division will receive a $5,000 championship for their efforts.
Joining the Modifieds during the Outlaw Spring Nationals will be the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints, led by 6-time and defending tour champion Steve Poirier. The first full points race for the ESS 360's will take place on this night with the tour racing for $2,000-to-win, $250 to take the green and the dash being sponsored by longtime supporter Lane's Yamaha out of Watkins Glen, NY.
In fact, Dundee, NY resident 'Mr. ESS' Malcolm Lane holds the all-time record for ESS wins at the facility known over the years as Dundee Raceway, Black Rock Speedway, Yates County Speedway and now Outlaw Speedway in 2016. With other tour regulars Jason Barney, Sammy Reakes IV, Paul Kinney, Matt Tanner and Chuck Hebing hungry for their first wins of 2016, this show will be a cannot miss!
The Super Gen Products Grit Series will also be on tap for a thrilling 602 Crate Sportsman event titled the “Showdown at Sundown” that falls on their 2016 American Racer Tour schedule. Casey Pavlick looks to defend his recent Grit wins at Outlaw Speedway as well as his second-straight track championship in 2015.
