Steve Paine Returns to Victory Lane at Black Rock

DUNDEE, NY - Steve Paine picked up right where he left off, running the inside of the 4/10-mile Black Rock Speedway to perfection to lead the final 10 laps en route to his second win of the year in the Marbles Automotive Modified Feature.

“The bottom was the only place to be tonight cause the bottom was gone,” said the Waterloo veteran who made the inside the ‘Paine Lane’. “Sometimes this track is different but tonight I knew where I had to be.”

The quiet competitor moved up to fourth place by lap seven and took the lead on lap 15 when race leader Ray Bliss got tangled up with the lapped car of Mark Bristol. Paine restarted in the lead and held off the hard-charging Brian Swarthout for the win.

Swarthout was gun-slinging around the top of the track and closing in on the No. 7x of Paine when the races final caution came out with five laps remaining. Swarthout used the yellow-flag to pull up along side the car he sponsors and let him know he was there.

“I figured he was running the top cause that’s where he likes to race,” noted Paine in Victory Lane. “I didn’t think much of it because he is a good guy and helps us out.”

On that final restart, Swarthout gave it one final crack at the win but Paine was too much on the inside, checking out for yet another win at Black Rock.

Like the first time “The Hurricane” won this season at BRS, Swarthout had to settle for second. And like the first race, Ray Bliss slipped back to third after losing the lead. Completing the trend of April 12th similarities, Rookie Mike Mahaney was fourth, picking up the Finger Lakes Auto, Truck and Marine NAPA Up-and-Comer Award. Rounding out the top-five was John Pfeffer.

Todd Henderson took the lead on the first lap of the Hoselton Auto Mall Sportsman Feature and set sail for his second straight win, his third of the season. Henderson, of Canandaigua, held off a steady challenge by Justin Wright to pick up the win by just over two seconds in his No. 18H.

“Track was nice, it slickend up, I like it when it’s like this,” said ‘Handsome Todd’. “When you get to the point quick it’s easier to hold them off.”

The races only yellow came on lap 15 when third place running Craig Gardner spun in turn three. It gave Wright the chance to pounce on the leader, but it was to no avail, as he had to settle for second.

Chuck Winslow recorded his best finish of his sportsman career, placing in third. Rounding out the top five was Fran Hilton and Loren Lincoln.

The Freedom Village USA Late Model Feature that was postponed from a week ago had the final 13 laps completed in an exciting green-flag fashion, with a three-car battle on for the win.

Jeremy Wonderling was pressuring Quinn Sutherland the entire racing, and the two battling for the lead allowed Jeff Chesebro to close in and throw his No. 97 in the mix. As the trio entered heavy lap traffic, Wonderling made his move to the outside of Sutherland and took the lead coming back to the white flag. As he took the lead, he made contact with traffic, giving his car cosmetic damage in the make-up feature.

Wonderling scored his fourth win of the season, with Sutherland a close second. Chesebro was third with Mikey Wonderling and Rich Karlnoski completing the scoreboard.

Wonderling added a broom to his collection later in the night, when he picked up the “sweep” of the night in the Freedom Village USA Late Models. Wonderling captured the lead on lap nine from Dave DuBois and used the very bottom of the racetrack to remain unbeaten for 2008 at BRS.

DuBois was able to hold on to second with Mikey Wonderling, Rich Karlnoski and Jeff Chesebro getting back into the top-five.

Rich Talada made a smooth pass on the inside of the track to take the lead from Nicole Barzee on lap 13 of the Labatt Blue Street Stock Feature. On his first trip to BRS this year, Talada had to hold off the fierce charges of Chris Fisher as they both went for their first win of the season. Fisher would fade with a flat tire on the final lap, opening up the door for the OH7.

Behind Talada was Adam DePuy, who was also running his first point race of the year at Black Rock. Nicole Barzee recorded her best career run in third with Fisher fourth and Jared Hill completing the top-five.

Del Cummings captured his first win of the season in the Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder feature. Cummings held off the advances of point leader Joe Povoski to equal his win total of 2008.

Povoski was second, with Jon Wallenbeck third in his first start of the year. Rounding out the top-five were Jack Ayers and Chris Woodard.

In the final feature of the night, Jon Wallenbeck reclaimed his glory in his second start of the season to pick up the win. Wallenbeck moved around Terry Povoski on a lap 8 restart and pulled away for the score.

While the No. 24 pulled away, a heavy battle was on behind him as the Povoski Brothers made comment coming back to the checkered flag. As they were touching, Ray Speicher slung around both for second place. Terry Povoski held off brother Joe for third, with Rich Sharpsteen II completing the top-five.

At the beginning of a busy evening, Cody Moorehouse captured the lead on the second lap of the Home Necessities Bandit Feature. Even though four-time winner Dylan Cecce pulled even multiple times with Moorehouse, the Flyin’ X staved up the fierce competition for his first win of the year.

Moorehouse kept his car sideways on the top of speedway as Cecee placed second, with Chad Winslow completing the podium.

Jeff Palmiter from Cohocton won the first firefighter enduro as he started at the back after a late entry and was still able to take the lead by lap 8. Rick Burke of Naples waited until the final lap to take the lead in the second firefighter enduro, but it was enough to claim that win.

Things got interesting in the spectator race finale as car class winner Tom Petro was able to hold off truck winner Willy Grant in a spirited battle.

A great racing card gets only better next week as the mighty monster trucks invade the Black Rock Speedway for two nights of action. Knight Settlement Sand and Gravel and J&J Coots Construction present the action.
