Ron Cartwright Jr. and Donnie Lawson Split 358-Mod Features, P.J. Chesson Leads IRL Brigade with NYMM Feature Win

DUNDEE, NY - On a night where Danica Patrick saw her dad win a celebrity 358-modified race, six drivers graced victory lane at Black Rock for the first time in 2007, including two modified drivers that were well overdo.

Ron Cartwright Jr. captured the win in the make-up Marbles Automotive 358-Modified feature, driving around Gil Tegg on lap 8 and cruising to the win, and a new position atop the point standings.

The Portageville driver looked strong back on June 8, when this feature was rained delayed; he showed his prowess once again and graced Victory Lane in Dundee, a place he visited on numerous occasions last year.

Gil Tegg was able to hold onto second with Serenity Sutherland picking up her second Up-and-Comer award in her No. 37. Ray Bliss Jr. had a solid points showing in fourth with Dave DuBois of Bath completing the top-five.

Donnie Lawson dominated the second 25-lap event later in the night; as he scored his first win in the Herrington Motorsports No. 1. The Woodhull hot shoe lead the entire way and won his first race in over two years.

Brian Swarthout chased down Lawson from an 11th place starting spot but would have to settle for second, giving him a solid night in his hunt for a third-straight title.

Mark Bristol had his best run in 358-modified, crossing in third and claiming his first Up-and-Comer Award. Rounding out the top five was rookie Dave DuBois of Corfu and race one winner Ron Cartwright Jr.

With the New York Modified Midgets in Yates County on Friday, they brought along with them two busloads of IRL members that would have a night of fun at the 4/10-mile. Among those having a blast was P.J. Chesson, who won the NYMM A-Main.

The former World of Outlaw winner and Central Pennsylvania force scored the win in the 600cc Micro Sprint event, running away from Ben Kysor and the rest of the field. After the race he would celebrate with donuts on the back stretch.

Behind Chesson and Kysor were Nick Cooper, Ray Sands and Jim Radney.

T.J. Patrick, father of IRL driver Danica Patrick, proved where the open-wheel star gets her genes, winning a 358-modified match race aboard a Gil Tegg Troyer.

The Patricks, along with 2006 Indianapolis 500 Champion Sam Hornish Jr., would be found in Victory Lane greeting an energetic crowd on a beautiful summer night. While the elder Patrick made news for his run on Friday, it would be Hornish’s father making headlines on Sunday.

Quinn Sutherland made the Dundee locals proud for the second-straight week, capturing back-to-back wins in the Freedom Village USA Super Stocks.

Sutherland used the high side to pull away from division dominator Jeremy Wonderling, forcing Wonderling to try everything around the speedway, none of which was good enough to stay with the D.B. Miles Insurace Agency No. 36.

Behind the top two were Bob Buono, Justtin Chaddock and Rich Karlnoski.

Nate Peckham waited longer than he expected, but he finally picked up his first win at Black Rock this year on Friday Night. The 2005 Champion survived the advances of newcomer Daryl Krebs to put the No. 90 in Victory Lane. Rich Sharpsteen, Jared Hill and Larry Fenton Jr. completed the top-five.

Terry Povoski has finially hit his stride of 2006 as he picked up another win in his No. 4 in the Regional Truck Pro Truck Feature. Chris Leroux led the first four laps but just before half way.

Adam Austin made his first start of the season at the Yates County Oval count in a big way, winning the Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder feature. Austin started 18th and it took him all 20 laps to take over the lead from Brett Crawford just after the white flag had been given. Derrick Mills, Kim Jennejohn and Jeremy Potrzebowski rounded out the top five.

Cody Moorehouse captured his first win of the season in the Home Necessites Bandits event, leading all 10 laps to pick up the win. David Ahouse held off point leader Tom Austin Jr. to score his best career finish, crossing in second.

The other division on the docket was the Atlantic Coast Old Timers. 80-year-old Lou Fray, who is celebrating his 60th season racing, captured the win in his Curtis Midget.

127 cars in the eight full-fledged divisions alone filled the pits on a landmark night for the speedway. Racing action roars along next Friday with the BRP Can-Am 360 Late Model tour invading the 4/10-mile.
